PORTSMOUTH — If all goes well with clearances and final tasks, part of Poco's Bow Street Cantina's new deck will be open Saturday, April 3.

On Friday, owner John Golumb was waiting for the Certificate of Occupancy from the city and if it comes through, he will open part of the new deck, which is a bar. The full and completed deck, with both levels and dining area, complete with awning, will not open until Thursday, April 8, along with the decks at the nearby RiverHouse and Ferry Landing restaurants.

“My wife Marlisa (Geroulo) put a lot of work into the new design and now we're putting in the finishing touches, putting a final seal on the bar stools and then the awning on Wednesday,” Golumb said. “We'll do a pre-opening on Saturday but the full opening with the final deck will be on Thursday.”

The deck, one of a series along Bow Street facing the harbor, was redesigned after the city decided to create a park in the space of the former deck. The new deck has been moved against the restaurant and added a second level.

Architect Lisa DeStefano said the new deck is going to be a popular place.

“We've been working on this for over three years,” she said. “The relocation from the previous spot had to meet all the building and life safety rules so now there will be more space between tables and the upper dining area where people can perch above and look out over the water.”

DeStefano said as many of the materials as possible to build the deck were supplied by local companies and are sustainable.

“The bartenders will be thrilled with the upgrades,” she said. “When the awning is installed it will look great, but at this time we just want to soak up the sun.”

Golumb said he wanted to give people a little taste of the deck now that good weather has finally come back to the Seacoast, hence Saturday's limited opening.

“My wife spent so much time on this, like she did with 2 Ceres St.,” Golumb said. “It will look great and I want people to see the finished design on Thursday.”

Geroulo designed the “green” martini bar next to Poco's, which opened in 2008.
