PORTSMOUTH — Gov. John Lynch signed legislation on Monday, Aug. 10 giving degree granting authority by the state of New Hampshire for a new university in Italy.

Also speaking at the bill signing ceremony, were prime sponsor, state Sen. Lou D'Allesandro, founder Lorenzina Zampedri, and Provost Dennis Bava. Also attending were university President Piero Ceria, State Sen. President Silvia Larsen and Father Jonathan DeFelice, university board member and president of Saint Anselm College in Manchester. Other board members included Portsmouth architect Lisa DeStefano and guests.

St. John International University, the first environmental American university in Italy, is a new private university in Vinovo just outside Torino. The campus “Della Rovere” is a renaissance castle dating to the 16th century. Its main administrative office is located in Concord.

SJIU offers undergraduate programs in Art History, Business Administration, Environmental Architecture, Environmental Science, and Film Studies, and graduate programs in Business, Arts Administration and Architecture, emphasizing the environment in its curriculum. All degrees are approved by the state of New Hampshire Post Secondary Education Commission. SJIU offers four-year bachelor programs, two-year master programs, and study abroad opportunities for American students.

Torino was selected as the site for the university because of its reputation as a European business center, its achievements in the fields of research and technology, and its architectural history — offering opportunities for internships with local businesses looking to meet the demands of the global market. Torino was host site of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

For program applications, brochures and information on upcoming conferences and workshops, visit www.sjiu.it or call its U.S. office in Concord at 227-9100, or the university campus directly at +39 011-550-9248.
