Hilton Garden Inn

The goal of the design was to represent a 'new' Portsmouth architecture with historic values and glimpses of modern life.

Starting with the well-established equation for hospitality the Hilton Hotel Brand has become associated with, D|A designed a building shell around these parameters, extending to the edges of a downtown site. A brick backdrop was determined and the appearance of a rhythmic series of buildings over 183 feet of streetscape was implied. A soaring glass awning wraps the corner, announcing entry. The ground level, illuminated by life from within, engages the city and increases the sense of a city center by another block.
