Wentworth Douglass Hospital

DeStefano Architects played in integral role in the design of this 160,000 sf hospital addition for Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, NH.  The project included 64 private medical-surgical patient rooms, a new 24-bed birthing center and a 15,000 sf education center.  The design of the exterior was intended to fit into the local historical context and connect the hospital to the City’s mill heritage.  Architectural features such as arches were applied at the pedestrian level to create a protected walkway for patients and staff. The arches were then carried throughout the new facades as fenestration, reminiscent of the prominent mill detailing along the Cocheco River.  The elevation most prominent to the surrounding neighborhoods was graced with a convex curve of brick to soften the edge.  The result was the successful marriage of interior and exterior appropriate to its surroundings.  DeStefano Architects partnered with Leo A. Daly to make this collaborative effort a success.
